I recently visited Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria, to discuss with the education commissioner whether closing 2,000 low-cost private schools was a good idea. Where would he put the 400,000 children thrown out of school if this were the case? Could his state afford the extra places?[/stm_blockquote][stm_spacing xs_spacing=”46px”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”7/12″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1568727491476{margin-top: -6px !important;margin-bottom: 26px !important;}”]

Low-Cost Private Schools Provide Effective Schooling For The Poor

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Private schools in developed countries are affordable only to those on the highest incomes. But surprisingly to many, this is not true across developing countries, where low-cost private schools are ubiquitous and affordable to all. In Lagos State, Nigeria, alone, there are an estimated 18,000 private schools, out of which over 12,000 are low-cost private schools compared to the approximately 1,700 public schools.

We have a success story in our backyard! Many low cost private schools provide effective schooling for our kids. We must work with them and support them to be successful. Proud to have hosted an amazing panel on this. #SDG4 @UKinNigeria @james_tooley @DFIDNigeria pic.twitter.com/tINBUYCs2e

This event brought together different stakeholders to discuss more ways to support low-cost private schools to be successful in serving children from low-income families. The keynote address by Professor James Tooley set the context for discussions by the panelists and the contributions from all stakeholders in attendance.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1568730662359{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]Are you interested in working with SEED to support low-cost private schools in providing education for children from low-income families?.
