SEED has partnered with Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a social impact organisation that seeks to eliminate the education deficit in Nigeria through raising prominent leaders across the nation in order to achieve the goal of sustainable education for all. Upon launching the SEED and TFN partnership for the 2018/2019 academic year, 13 Teach For Nigeria Fellows were assigned to 7 SEED schools in low-income communities. With a focus on serving some of the nation’s most under-resourced schools, we are working together to create a movement of leaders who are committed to putting an end to education inequity, and in doing so, building a better Nigeria.

Nigeria’s statistics reflects a broken education system that makes it difficult for children to receive the schooling they deserve. As millions of children in Nigeria lack access to schools, even more are attending schools without the necessary resources to foster their future potential for success: one of the scarcest resource at these schools are quality teachers. Where SEED has been working to increase the management capacity of school leaders, this new partnership between SEED and Teach For Nigeria bolsters our mutual goals to improve children’s educational opportunities.

SEED-TFN Impact Story

SEED caught up with Grace Akinsola, who is now a 2019 Teach For Nigeria Alumni. Grace served in one of our low-fee private schools – Al-Firdaus Paradise Nursery and Primary School in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria.

Grace is a Computer Science graduate from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Osun State, Nigeria. She was a Program Manager/Systems Analyst with Interswitch Nigeria before she decided to join Teach For Nigeria to play her part in the education sector of Nigeria.

Al-Firdaus Paradise Nursery and Primary School is a faith-based (islamic) low-fee private school serving children from low-income families. As a Christian, Grace was pleased to serve wherever she was called and she was welcomed at Al-Firadus Paradise with open arms. Everyone in the school was welcoming, kind and humble. According to Grace,

We are first born as humans before we were defined by the community we find ourselves. So everyone should be treated as humans. We were a community, regardless of our religion. The school owner was open to suggestions when I provided her with ways she could grow her school. She is definitely not profit driven but impact driven.

Grace was a breath of fresh air in the school. She came with new and innovative teaching methods. Her pupils were exposed to experiential learning, where the local community became their classroom. She also taught with videos and introduced drawing and arts to the children. She also left her lasting mark on the school in other ways because when her fellowship was over, she contributed towards painting three classrooms.

The school proprietor has this to say about Grace.

Grace exceeded my expectation. She brought new innovations in various aspects of the school from teaching methods to extra-curricular activities. She worked well with other teachers and provided suggestions to me on different ways to improve the school. She was able to address students’ weaknesses and helped improve their overall performance. We are proud that all students in the class she taught in Basic 5/6 passed their external examinations.
